Sarah's Key by Tatiana de Rosnay. What a fabulous story! An expat-in-France must-read. Highly recommended for everyone else.

Malavita by Tonino Benacquista (in French). What a FUN story. Good enough to drag you through all of the French vocabulary you don't yet know!
This book has pretty much rocked my spiritual world (or lack thereof) lately. Especially for women raised in the Evangelical Protestant tradition.

This book is my favorite since "History of Love". A beautiful story told in an original manner. You have to read it. You do.
Holy cow can this woman write! Probably why she just won the Nobel Prize for Literature. These are short stories - good for parents of young children.
This is one of the stranger books I have read. But there are parts I can't get out of my mind, they seem so true (though so unlikely). Don't let the first chapter stop you - plug through and get your reward.

If you haven't read this book about the New Yorker writer, Adam Gopnik, living in Paris with his wife and son, you MUST! Not to be missed.
Reading between the lines of this book teaches you a hell of a lot about French women. Just don't try her leek soup diet. Your spirit will wither and die.
Thanks to this book I can carry on a semi-knowledgable conversation at French dinner parties. For those who already know a bit about the French.

My friends sent me this last year when I had to cook on a regular basis for my picky father-in-law. I have been happily cooking my way through its recipes ever since.

Doesn't it feel good to belong? Our kids started at new schools this year and I have felt like a foreigner when I go pick them up. It always feels good when others smile at me. I might actually make friends there one day!

Yeah Amy! YOu give me hope. I have lived in our small (and I mean SMALL) country community for the last 3 years but once Sophia enters her school years I hope to be able to have more interactions with other parents of little ones in our community.
Good for you -- in about 4 more years, maybe you can move from "vous" to "tu"! ;)

Jenny - people told me I would meet other parents when Max started school. And it hasn't come automatically. But I think it's coming nonetheless! I'm sure it will for you too.
La Mom - It took 1 year for my MIL to tell me to "tutoie" her, so I've learned patience!
